Everybody Loves to Cha Cha Cha!

Oh Sam Cooke, how are you so awesome?
The past few days at work I've been playing "Portrait of a Legend" on repeat as I pack up books and rocking out. I used to get embarrassed when people would walk through and stop dancing, but that wore off quickly.
I'm also really digging Bert Kaempfert and the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

Why can't it be the 1950s again? (Yes, I'm aware that the previously mentioned singers are from ~1960.) I really want to find dresses like these everywhere I look! I tried buying a couple on the e-bays, but they all sold for more than I wanted to pay. I'm going to try and hit up Value Village tomorrow and see if I can find anything interesting.

Fuck you too, exam schedule OR There's a health building?

School is going awkwardly. I'm not taking any Archaeology this semester and am instead doing most of my electives, which are three first year classes (two Philosophy's and an English) and a second year class (Photography). I've only got essays due in one class (which happens to be the only class that has required readings) so I've been slacking off. I've also been sleeping through classes, mostly due to the fact that I can't seem to be asleep before 5a.m. This really hasn't been a big deal (I just read the 'recommended' reading and discover what we talked about in class), except I've got midterms coming up.
"What's that?" you say, "Midterms? Why it's only the beginning of February!". Yep, but I've got three midterms in each Philosophy class! Three! Each class! Who does this? I don't think I'd be so upset except the course descriptions say that the classes will rely heavily on essay writing and in reality there are no essays and three midterms. THREE!!!

Photography is going well and turning out to be pretty lucrative. You all remember that VASU auction I was telling you to check out? Well I sold a crap load of stuff there and then some of the people who didn't bid high enough to win the pictures contacted me and had me make more prints. I'm still really flattered by that.
I'm thinking of switching to a fine arts major just because it's so much fun, but I don't think that's really a viable option career-wise. ...And my parents would kill me. That too.

Fast

My friends are throwing a holiday pot-luck party tonight. I've been fasting for the last five days (as in, this is day five) and I have never been more excited for a holiday party in my life. Fasting has also made me appreciate the luxury of food and being able to eat whatever I wanted whenever I wanted it. As much as I've always love the holidays as an opportunity to get together with all my friends and family, I now see them as an opportunity to be with them and really treat ourselves to delicious feasts that we're providing for one another. The way I view food has changed, I plan on eating a lot more consciously - and I thought I was eating consciously. All in all, I think it was a worth while experiment, one I'll probably try again next year. Except maybe I'll only go three days. No matter what you say Vin, day four was hell!

Silence!!

What are you doing December 7th - 11th? Going to see 'Silence', VASU's gallery/silent auction? That's what I thought! If you do go, you'll see a fantastic series up for auction entitled "Dinosaurs of the Midwest" which, coincidentally, can also be found on my Flicker page! So come out, support local artists and get some wicked cool artwork to decorate your bleak lives/apartment with. The reception and auction (and snacks and booze) is taking place on Friday, Dec. 11th from 7:30 - 10:30 at the Gordon Snelgrove Gallery.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got an assignment due tomorrow. The assignment is to compile an extensive bibliography and write a three page summary of a site mentioned in our text (I chose Pueblo Bonito). I was sitting pretty. I had a five page bibliography and a vague idea of what my summery was going to be (Three pages? No problem!). So I worked on an essay I've got on the go, ate some supper and had a nap so I could stay up working late, then returned to my assignment. All I had to do was read some articles. Found on jstor. Which crashed. Along with ALL THE OTHER ONLINE JOURNAL DATABASES!!!!!!!
Now the library is closed and I'm screwed! All Google can find is a rather, er, "lacking" Wikipedia article and a bunch of information on a resort in Mexico also named Pueblo Bonito.
Now I have to make absolute sure that I wake up so I can get to the library when it opens... but someone's taken all the books on Pueblo Benito out. So I guess I just hope jstor is up soon? I've e-mailed my prof. so if it's not back up, I can a least hope she's merciful.

Dr. Jane Goodall was on the Daily Show today. She seems like the sweetest lady ever. I really wish I would have seen her when she came to speak at the U of S two years (two? yeah, two) ago.

Speakin' of famous ladies, Anne Murry is coming to McNally tomorrow. Jordan is in charge of letting her in the receiving doors when she gets here. Apparently she can't go through the main doors because she's too famous/popular. I'm really not looking forward to the huge amounts of people that will be in the store.

Damnit Baseball, I just want to watch Seinfeld.

My house is divided against itself. The front half (bathroom, hallway, coat closet, and kitchen) all got a through cleaning, while my bedroom, living room, and laundry room remain filthy! Well, not filthy, very disorganized. Rob came over today and is probably judging me right now.
I'm waiting for some pictures I took to convert from .nef to .tiff. Why does this take SO LONG? And I can't even do anything in the background, so I've just got to turn the monitor off my PC and walk away, maybe to update my Live Journal.
I started this new RP called Mutant Bikers from the Atomic Wasteland, GMed by my co-worked Vin. He's pretty awesome. MBotAW is based on the Gamma Wrold RP, using the Teenagers from Outer Space rules. It's high camp and character development, low math and rule-drudgery. Check out Vin's Google site for more info.
I've been thinking of running my own RPG sometime in the "near" "future", but I don't know when I'll have the time. Unless it's an archaeology-based RPG, that could be... interesting.
I'm still looking for <s>rubes</s> friends to take pictures of for photography! You don't necessarily have to get naked!!

Music and Toronto

I've taken up learning the guitar! Josh is teaching me once a week-ish and, well, it's awesome (note, that does not read "I'm awesome"). I really enjoy being musical again. I haven't played an instrument since high-school. Shut up, Rob, drums DO count!
I saw Chad VanGaalen live at the Broadway Theater tonight, he was as fantastic as I hoped he'd be. I got my CD signed and stole the set list, which is written out by hand and has a drawing of a penis and asshole on the back!
I saw Hope Sandoval on Wednesday in Toronto, it was also a good show. She had a video play along for every song, which was really interesting and really helped in my "good show" rating. However, Hope herself is quite the diva. Jordan and I talked with her after the show. We asked her to sign our CD and set list--if you want a set list from a show, get me to tag along, I'm excellent at grabbing them--and she said that she's looking to produce good sound, which I can understand, but to go so far as to leave if she doesn't like how the venue sounds or if a few people are talking is a bit much in my opinion. Jordan enjoyed it a lot more than I did, but he's a bigger fan than I am.
Toronto was fantastic! I love that city. I want to move there. I've been to a lot of different cities in many different countries but never have I been so in love with one. Well, maybe Bangkok, but I don't want to live in Bangkok. I want to live in Toronto. I want to get my Classical Archaeology degree from the U of T, work in the Royal Ontario Museum, go out of my way on the subway to Union station and get a Veggie dog from the street vendor, drink at the Communists' Daughter, and stop off for falafel sandwiches as I stumble home.

Photography

Today was my first Art216(Photography) class. I'm so excited! Art161 (first year photography) was definitely one of the highlights of my summer. I've got some rolls of film to develop (but first I need to find them), so I may head back there tomorrow. I'm just really looking forward to the long nights in the dark room. And now that I have access to the aforementioned dark room, I can print out the pictures some of you said you'd like! I'll be posting my contact sheets on my Flicker account. If anyone wants a picture, leave a comment either here or on Flicker. They're not up there yet because my printer/copier/scanner is out of ink and apparently won't work at all when it's out of ink (even to scan! You don't need ink to scan!).
If anyone wants to come on a shoot with me or wants to model for me, give me a call, leave a comment, send a messenger pigeon, etc. etc. Unless I'm working or at school, I'll go any time!

(I'm putting the CRNs beside them in brackets in case I loose the little piece of paper they're all written down on!)

Term 1

Classics 220 - Daily Life in Greece and Rome (87317)
Classics 247 - Introduction to Greek Archaeology (85217)
Archaeology 251 - Interpretation of Prehistory (84327)
Archaeology 257 - Archaeology of Ancient Egypt (80206)
Art 216 - Photography (81943)

Term 2

English 111 - Reading Poetry (20337)
English 112 - Reading Drama (20340)
Classics 111 - Roman Civilization (20260)
Archaeology 244 - Archaeology of Ancient Israel and Syria (20307)
Photography is a 6cu class, so I'll have it in term 2, too!

Let me know if we're in any classes together!

Dear Sebastian

Yesterday I was informed that my car is being written off. As a result, it needed to be cleaned out today. It was really sad. The Neon (a.k.a Sebastian, Darth Neon, The Bucket) was my first car. It was in that car that Robbie and I made out, Beth transported the Daily Planet globe (I finally ended up cleaning all that glue off about a month before I got into the accident), I first took Felis home, Beth and I almost landed in the river, Jen & Scott and I went to TV on the Radio. That car took me to my familiar home and to lonely fields with star-filled skies. It was my safe place and my escape. It used to be a reliable car, not any more. I know it's time to say goodbye and find a more reliable car, but it's still sad to see Sebastian go.

It is HOT!

My mom, being the fantastic mom that she is, bought me a patio set! It's just a simple table and two chairs, but I love it. I've eaten almost every meal out there since I've gotten it.
Speaking of my awesome mom, today she took me to buy groceries, my car still being out of commission, and I'm making myself veggie kabobs for supper, yummm! They're on my itty bitty barbecue right now. I also bought meat to make Jordan a sandwich with for our picnic tomorrow. We're going to Bents, which used to be a town in the sixties and is about 1/2 an hour out of town, to take some pictures and have lunch amidst the crumbling houses.

I'm so thankful for my a/c. I'm also really happy that it gets to my bedroom. I remember that in our old apartment, Robbie and I would be sweating to death in the bedroom while the air conditioner was working full blast in the living room. I usually only have it going during the night and then switch it over to dehumidifying during the day. Today however, I woke up, turned off the a/c, opened my patio door, stuck my head outside, closed the patio door and turned the a/c back on.

Anywho, food is ready!

Grahhhh

WFT Saskatoon Transit?! It's quicker for me to go up to the university, transfer buses and head to Arlington to get to work than it is for me to go straight down 8th street? How does that make sense? My dad's trying to convince me that I don't need a car. The buses are ok to get to the university (ok at best, I usually have to arrive at the bus stop 15 min. before the bus "arrives" just in case it comes early, which it often does. IT'S CALLED A SCHEDULE FOR A GODDAMN REASON!!) but getting anywhere else is pure hell, with the exception of downtown--which is pure hell for a different reason!
Argh! In regards to me getting a car he told me that the "question is, Where [why is that capitalized?] do you set your priorities right now? is [and why isn't this?] university what you want to concentrate on? If so, I would suggest you forget about a vehicle all together and utilize public transit. This way you can avoid all the expenses associated with a vehicle and it's ["it is"?] operation." What? How will owning a vehicle make it harder for me to concentrate on University? Yes, I'll have to deal with the costs of owning a vehicle, but that won't interfere with University in any way because YOU ARE PAYING FOR THAT! Yes, you are! You're legally fucking obligated to!

Gah, sorry for being so rant-y, it really pisses me off that he's constantly threatening to not pay for school.

Freak-tastic!

Last night I had this dream that I had a baby, only it was just a head. It would wiggle around and kind of burrow into my sweater, so I wrapped it up in a baby blanket and held it as if it had a body. So, basically I was just sitting there with this head in the crook of my arm. I kept expecting it to die any minute, but it just sat there and looked up at me.

It was one of the weirder dreams I've had lately!

Star Wars

Space channel has been running all the Star Wars episodes today. I watched the end of Revenge of the Sith and New Hope, and was really reminded of this little bit of Family Guy comedy gold:

<lj-embed id="3" />

Music Thingy

This is also up on THE FACEBOOK! It's mostly here for Robbie's benefit...

- Put your music player on shuffle.

-Write down the first two lines of the first 30 songs that play.

-If the name of the song is in those lines, skip to the next song.

-Comment and guess what the songs are! (NO GOOGLING)

-When someone has guessed correctly, strike through that answer.

1. <s>When you were here before I couldn't look you in the eye
You're just like an angel, your skin makes me cry</s>

2.<s> Sorta wonder why no one said a word, don't you like it on the sly?
Don't you like it till it hurts?</s>

3. <s>I'll be the grapes fermented, bottled, and served with the table set,
in my finest suit, like a perfect gentlemen.</s>

4.<s> It's true that all the men you knew were dealers
who said they were through with dealing every time you gave them shelter</s>

5.<s> Now I greet you form the other side of sorrow and despair,
with a love so fast an shattered it will reach you everywhere.</s>

6. Wait your turn. You always go for the jugular.
Like a juggernaut spinning off the asphalt.

7.<s> G! R! Double E! N! LEAVES!
G! R! Double E! N! LEAVES!</s>

8.<s> I loved you in the morning our kisses deep and warm
your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy, golden storm.</s>

9. <s>This is nothing like it was in my room,
in my best clothes, trying to think of you.</s>

10. I'm coming up only to hold you under.
I'm coming up only to show you wrong.

11.<s> Why don't you ever wanna play?
I'm tired of this piece of string.</s>

12.<s> Your slim frame, your eager eyes, and your wild mane.
Oh they keep me where belong, all wrapped up in wrong.</s>

13.<s> Rose, I'm feeling older.
I was lucky as a four-leaved clover.</s>

14. <s>How do - how do you do? My name is you.
The flies they all gather 'round me and you, too.</s>

15. <s>Sleep all day, just waiting for the sun to set.
I hang my clothes up on the line.</s>

16.<s> It's not the wind that keeps you up. It's not the snow, it's not the moon
coming like a headlight through your window.</s>

17. Stoppin' by after work 'cause I'm that kind of jerk.
Gonna grab it by the knees, gonna push it 'til it hurts.

18.<s> Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry. You don't know how lovely you are.
I had to find you, tell you I need you, tell you I set you apart.</s>

19. <s>I'm the same as I was when I was six years-old
and oh my god I feel so damn old, I don't really feel anything.</s>

20. <s>A svelte young man, eighteen lovers to his name.
Well if the rumors are true then eighteen lovers came crawling back again.</s>

21. (What's up? Make love?)
Rag weed's tall
Better hope that his ladder don't crack

22. <s>Now I've heard there was a secret chord that David played and it pleased the lord,
But you don't really care for music, do you?</s>

23. Get straight, wait here while I try and find the exit sign.
When will you stop asking strangers? No one wants what we want.

24. <s>I wanna live in the city with no more friends and family.
I'm gonna look out the window of my colour TV.</s>

25.<s> Daddy please hear this song that I sing.
In your heart there's a spark that just screams</s>

26. <s>Smeared black ink, your palms are sweaty and I'm barley listening
to last demands. I'm staring at the asphalt wondering what's buried underneath</s>

27.<s> So you wanna be a hero, kid? Well whoop-de-do!
I have been around the block before with block-heads just like you.</s>

28. <s>I'll be home when your hair has fallen out.
You'll be home when it reaches the ground.</s>

29. <s>Come over to the window my little darlin' I'd like to try and read your palm
I used to think I was some kind of gypsy boy before I let you take me home.</s>

30. <s>This was a triumph! I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.</s>

Over on the FaceBook:
Aidan: #1 Creep - Radiohead
Jerry: #2 Raw Sugar - Metric
Jared : #3 Brand New Colony - Postal Service
Jared : #9 Mr. November - The National
Adam : #14 Alone Down There - Modest Mouse
Adam : #19 Neverending Math Equation - Modest Mouse
Susan: #22 Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen
Adam : #27 Zero to Hero - Hercules Soundtrack
Jared : #24 A Different City
Adam : #30 Still Alive - Portal
